Partitioning of Iron Between Liquid and Crystalline Phases of (Mg,Fe)O

چکیده
The density contrast between crystals and coexisting liquids is key to understanding the evolution of magma ocean. While remain denser than isochemical in most oxide silicate systems over pressure range Earth's mantle, element partitioning, particularly abundant heavy elements such as iron, can alter buoyancy. We use molecular dynamics simulations based on spin-polarized functional theory adiabatic switching determine free energy iron substitution liquid crystalline (Mg,Fe)O distribution coefficient. find that strongly incompatible with a coefficient less 0.3 mantle range. crystal buoyant respect at pressures exceeding 50 GPa. high-spin low-spin transition has an important influence coefficient, which decreases increasing up 80 GPa, then increases further increase pressure.

Liquid Crystalline Phases of DNA
The DNA molecule is the support of the genetic information. It is a right-handed double helix, 22 angstrom in diameter, and 50 nm in the persistence length. The two strands of the helix are complementary in their nucleotide sequence with about 10 nucleotide pairs per helical turn. DNA is a long and strongly charged heteropolymer. It bears on average one elementary negative charge per each 0.17 ...

The properties of liquid-crystalline (LC) hybrid systems made of inorganic nanoparticles grafted with photosensitive azo compounds are presented. For materials with a large density of azo ligands at the surface, the LC structure can be reversibly melted by UV light, and the return to the LC state does not require the absorption of visible light. For systems with a lower density of azo ligands, ...

Liquid-crystalline phases of ultracold atoms
When atoms move in a standing wave created by two counterpropagating laser beams, they experience a periodic potential. This potential arises because the electric field in the standing wave induces an electric dipole in the atoms, which in turn seek out the most intense regions of electric field. Atoms in optical lattice potentials can simulate a variety of condensed matter phenomena including,...
